The inpatient unit has 25 beds located in single rooms and small wards. Our patients have life limiting illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease and end stage heart failure. They come into the inpatient unit to have their symptoms assessed and alleviated. Some do spend their last days being cared for in the inpatient unit and others stay for a couple of weeks only. The average stay is about two weeks.
We try to make sure there is a relaxed, calm and friendly atmosphere in which patients and their families can feel comfortable and welcomed.
Our team
The inpatient unit has much higher staffing levels than a hospital. This means doctors, nurses and therapists can spend time with patients and their families and friends. In this way, we can ensure the care we provide is right for each individual patient.
Our team consists of doctors, registered nurses and nursing auxiliaries. It also includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists and an admission and discharge nurse who work to enable patients to return home to their everyday lives. We have a Social Work, Counselling and Chaplaincy department to provide psychological, social and spiritual support for patients and families.
Representatives from patients’ own faith community are welcome to visit too.
Our team of volunteer complementary therapists offer treatments which enhance wellbeing and relaxation and many patients really appreciate the opportunity to visit our hairdressers during their stay.
Useful information for inpatients
When patients are referred to us, they are given a small booklet which gives them practical information they may need if they are admitted to the inpatient unit – things like what medication and clothing to bring in with them.
When patients go home following a stay on the inpatient unit they are given a short questionnaire to complete. This is important because it tells us if we are offering the right services in an acceptable way.
