The Day Hospice is open from Monday to Friday and patients attend from about 10 am until 3 pm on four of those days. Tuesdays are used for outpatient consultations and treatments such as blood transfusions.
The regular Day Hospice team consists of nursing staff and three or four volunteers on each day.
Activities
Most patients come to the Day Hospice on one day a week. They have the opportunity to discuss their symptoms and other concerns and may see one of the Hospice doctors. Complementary therapies and hairdressing are available some days and there is a sensory room for relaxation. Different activities take place at different times – these include, for instance, an Art Club, gentle exercise sessions and reminiscence therapy.
Transport
For patients who have difficulty getting to the Day Hospice, we can offer transport thanks to our team of volunteer drivers. They use either a Hospice vehicle adapted to take wheelchairs and oxygen, or their own cars.
Support
Many people attending the Day Hospice say that the greatest benefit of all is the opportunity to meet and talk to others in similar situations as themselves as far as their health is concerned.
Like most Day Hospices we operate an active Discharge Policy, which we see as a positive process for patients who are well, or whose disease is stable, and who no longer need this particular service. The discharge will be tailored to fit the individual and may involve researching alternative arrangements. Discharged patients can always be referred back at a later date if this is needed.
