Share Giving

Giving shares is not as complicated as it may seem. Many people have shares that they may have received when a building society became a bank for example, or have been given shares as a bequest from a loved one. These shares often sit for years forgotten by their owner as they are not sure how to cash in on their value or it may not be worth the effort of finding a broker to sell them on for you.

An alternative to finding a broker and dealing with the stock market is to gift the shares to us at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. We have a specialist broker who carries out all the transactions for us and the money raised goes directly into funding the much needed work carried out by the staff here. Generally any shares given will be sold automatically. In rare circumstances they are kept as the longer term returns are assessed as being significant.

This way of giving can also be very tax effective for you. Any gift of shares to a charity is not taxed and so the full value comes to the Hospice. Also if you are considering leaving shares in your will, this amount is taken off the total estate value and so the inheritance tax bill will not be so significant for your loved ones.
