Big Yellow Stores up Goodwill for Hospice

A city storage firm is making a big yellow difference to Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, thanks to its donation of free space to the charity.

Big Yellow in Adams Street, Aston, has given 50 sq ft of storage space to the Selly Park-based hospice which cares for people with life-limiting illnesses across Birmingham and Sandwell.

The kind gesture means funds previously spent on storage of indispensable admin documents and various bits of equipment can go directly to patient care.

Hospice Facilities Administrator Cynthia Corbett welcomed the donation: “We’re very grateful to Big Yellow for offering this fantastic space. Their warehouse is incredibly modern and clean and is exactly what we need for storage.

“It’s also a great example of how corporate partners can support Birmingham St Mary’s. While financial support is vital, this kind of partnership can also make a huge difference and is extremely valuable to us.”

Big Yellow Birmingham Acting Store Manager Luke McLaughlin added: “As a business we place a high value on supporting good causes, so we’re extremely happy to help Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. It’s a much-cherished local charity and we look forward to taking care of their storage needs over the coming years.”

Since its launch in 1979, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has cared for tens of thousands of people with life-limiting illnesses, such as cancer, motor neurone disease and MS.

With around 52 percent of the Hospice’s budget reliant on public goodwill, community fundraising is crucial to ensuring its highly specialised services can continue to be offered to the people of Birmingham and Sandwell.

In addition to a 25-bed Inpatient Unit, Birmingham St Mary’s boasts a 20-place Day Hospice and provides community care to people who wish to stay in their own homes.

The Hospice also supports relatives with bereavement preparation, physiotherapy tuition and counselling in addition to many other services.

Annual running costs stand at £6.3 million, with around £1 million being raised in the Hospice’s shops and £2.7 million via fundraising. The remainder comes from the NHS.
