Midlands Business Marks 10 Years of Support for Hospice

April 27, 2010

A Midlands business has just marked 10 years of solid support for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice – by donating a cheque for £500.

Since the Millennium Concept Saab, which has car dealerships in Sutton Coldfield, Coventry and Leamington Spa, has given a total of £11,906 to Birmingham St Mary’s, the only independent adult hospice serving people with life-limiting illnesses in the Birmingham and Sandwell area.

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice Corporate Fundraiser Yvonne McPhillips (pictured with Jon Champs of Concept Saab) was delighted with the donation.

“Concept Saab is a much-valued, long-term supporter of Birmingham St Mary’s. Thanks to their community-spirited approach to business during the past 10 years, they have made a big contribution to ensuring the Hospice can continue providing highly-specialised palliative care and support to the people of Birmingham and beyond. We are truly grateful to them,” Yvonne said.

Concept Saab Managing Director, Gary Clay, explained why the company had been such a strong supporter of Birmingham St Mary’s.

He said: “Because the Hospice has touched the lives of so many people in Birmingham we feel as a local company that it is important to get behind this fantastic local charity.

“Many of us will know someone who has been involved with Birmingham St Mary’s in one way or another; we are extremely proud to be able to do our bit to ensure that the vital services it provides are continued for many future generations.”

Since its launch in 1979, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has cared for tens of thousands of people with life-limiting illnesses.

And with more than 50 percent of the Hospice’s budget reliant on public goodwill, community fundraising is crucial to ensuring its highly specialised services can continue to be offered to the people of Birmingham and Sandwell.

In addition to a 25-bed Inpatient unit, Birmingham St Mary’s boasts a 20-place Day Hospice and provides community care to people who wish to stay in their own homes. The Hospice, whose running costs stand at £6.3 million a year, also supports relatives with bereavement preparation, physiotherapy tuition and counselling in addition to many other services.

Its nurses, often referred to by patients and relatives as ‘angels’, are renowned for going that extra mile to ensure people with terminal illnesses enjoy the best possible quality of life.
