The care we give

Often referred to by patients and relatives as ‘angels’, our nurses are renowned for going that extra mile to ensure people with life-limiting illnesses enjoy the best possible quality of life.

And we provide this service for as long as families need us.

Since its launch in 1979, the Hospice has cared for tens of thousands of people with conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease and MS.

Our facilities and services

In addition to a 25-bed Inpatient Unit, where people can stay for vital respite, Birmingham St Mary’s boasts a 20-place Day Hospice and provides care to people who wish to stay in their own homes.

The Day Hospice is a community in its own right, with people of all ages visiting every week to find release through a range of therapies, art and most importantly fellowship.

The Hospice also supports relatives with bereavement preparation, physiotherapy tuition and counselling in addition to many other services.

What they say about us

"The work that you carry out at St Mary’s is very caring and with dignity."

"… a huge thank you to all of you for your never ending smiles, thoughtfulness and caring ways. You really do make a difference to people’s lives, both in your care and their families. Be proud of the work you do."

"We thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

"Thank you to our pink and blue angels … words cannot express how grateful we are for the tremendous care and support you gave … you are all true angels and will always be in our hearts."

"I always felt reassured when you visited, as I knew that you would offer the best advice and care and you always visited when we asked."

How much it costs

With around 52 percent of the Hospice’s budget reliant on public goodwill, community fundraising is crucial to ensuring its highly specialised services can continue to be offered to the people of Birmingham and Sandwell.

Annual running costs stand at £6.6 million, with around £1 million being raised in the Hospice’s shops and £2.7 million via community fundraising events. The remainder comes from the NHS.
